Kosala Abeygunawardena, Clinical Associate, offers individual psychotherapy, psychodiagnostic assessments, and psychoeducational assessments to clients 18 years and older under the direct supervision of Dr. Vasanthi Valoo.

As a Clinical Associate, Kosala’s interests and experience are in providing treatment for ADHD, trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, interpersonal difficulties, self-esteem, and grief. She has extensive experience working with clients affected by workplace injuries (WSIB), especially first responders, and those impacted by adverse childhood experiences. She offers cognitive behavioural therapy for ADHD as well as supportive therapy to help clients cope with a variety of day-to-day issues, with a focus on safety, regulation, and connection.

In addition, she is trained in and has experience providing psychodiagnostic and psychoeducational assessments for adults to determine ADHD, learning problems, and comorbid diagnoses, including but not limited to mood and anxiety disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, substance-related disorders, and personality disorders. She has worked with at-risk adolescents at a non-profit organization, providing therapeutic foster care and addressing issues such as childhood abuse, self-harm, suicidality, and substance abuse.

 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Kosala holds a Master’s Degree in Psychology and a Certificate in Trauma Psychotherapy from Adler Graduate Professional School. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences from the University of Toronto, as well as a Diploma in Applied Psychology and Counselling from the Kelowna College of Professional Counselling. She is working towards registration as a Psychological Associate with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO).

 

APPROACH

Kosala’s clinical practice focuses on providing treatment from a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive perspective. She works compassionately and collaboratively with her clients to help them move toward positive change. She ensures that her clients feel heard, understood, and valued. She strives to create a safe and non-judgemental space that facilitates self-discovery and growth for her clients. Kosala utilizes an integrative approach, tailored to the unique needs of each client, drawing from Psychodynamic Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Mindfulness.

 

ABOUT

Kosala enjoys spending time in nature, travelling, and has an avid interest in physical activities, including yoga and strength training. She values these activities for herself and others to ensure well-being.
