Dr. Vasanthi Valoo (she/her), Clinical Psychologist, offers individual psychotherapy, couples psychotherapy, psychological assessments, and psychoeducation to clients 18 years and older. Dr. Valoo’s practice focuses on the assessment and treatment of emotional and cognitive difficulties in adults. She also provides supervision and consultation to mental health professional trainees working with adults.
Psychotherapy treatments address a range of issues, including trauma, chronic pain, acculturation, anxiety, bereavement, childbirth, childhood abuse, disabilities, depression, employment-related stress, ethnicity and culture, grief, interpersonal relationships, intimacy, loss, parenting, pregnancy, stress, personality disorders, and psychiatric issues.
Dr. Valoo has been providing couples therapy since 2001. She is trained in a range of couples therapy approaches, including Emotion Focused Therapy.
Dr. Valoo offers a range of comprehensive psychological assessments for clients aged 18 years and older, including assessments for ADHD, Learning Disorders, and ASD. She also provides psychodiagnostic assessments to determine emotional impairments.
Dr. Valoo has provided training to practicum students and offers supervision to clinicians working toward registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
Approach
Dr. Valoo’s practice is guided by evidence-based assessments and treatments, current empirical research findings, and the guidelines and laws set by professional and regulatory organizations. An effective therapeutic relationship is developed through collaboration between clients and Dr. Valoo, fostering openness, honesty, and a commitment to change. Her role is to facilitate the therapeutic process as clients make changes they believe are important to their functioning. She supports and encourages change in a safe and confidential therapeutic environment using an experiential treatment approach that incorporates cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, emotion-focused therapy, insight-oriented therapy, and trauma-focused therapy. Dr. Valoo is attuned to the uniqueness of her clients’ experiences and the cultural contexts in which their uniqueness emerges. She emphasizes cultural sensitivity in the practice of psychology, addressing issues of difference, diversity, cultural identity, sexual orientation, gender, and the socio-political-cultural contexts that influence psychological challenges.
Professional Experience
Dr. Valoo is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Clinical Psychologist and is fully qualified to practise clinical psychology. She holds a Master’s degree in Counselling from Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, and a Master’s and Ph.D. degree in Psychology from Fielding Graduate University. She holds a certificate in Parent-Infant Mental Health and received training in Emotion Focused Therapy under the supervision of Dr. Les Greenberg, Clinical Psychologist, at York University, where she completed her supervised practice. She is a member of the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) and the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance (CADDRA).
Dr. Valoo has been providing psychological services in academic and private practice settings since 2008. She also provides psychological services at Markham Psychologists. From 2008 to 2018, she served as Contract Faculty in the Department of Psychology at York University. Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Valoo worked as a mental health professional and teacher for D/deaf individuals. Her practice is governed by the Canadian Psychological Association Code of Ethics and the professional standards of the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
About
Dr. Valoo was born in South Africa and began her career as a teacher for D/deaf students there. Before obtaining her doctorate in psychology as a mid-career professional, she worked as a mental health professional for several years, providing services to D/deaf clients in academic and social service settings in Canada and the United States. Dr. Valoo is passionate about lifelong learning, personal growth, and work-life balance. She is deeply inspired in her practice as a psychologist and enjoys spending time with family and friends, engaging in outdoor activities, travelling, and caring for her pets.
